Another phase of the Gateway to the Arts District has been completed with the initial murals by Jose “Sparx” Rimerez. For three weekends in the hot August sun, he created a theme of art, music, and theater to welcome everyone to our thriving arts district. You may have also noticed the sidewalks, center median, and landscaping being cleaned up by Bryan Place volunteers. We had a small but determined group of volunteers doing some clean up. We had a visit from Councilwoman Angela Hunt who was very impressed with the progress we are making on the project. She is going to visit with TXDOT about adding some additional lighting under the bridges and the mowing on the north side of Ross Ave. We also had a visit from Nancy Visser, our neighbor, who is with the Dallas Morning News. She interviewed BPNA President David Allen and our artist, Sparx Rimerez.

The next time you see one of these neighbors, be sure and tell them thanks for their work. Those giving of their time were: Robin Stewart, Toni Threadgill, Richard Boul, Lynn and Dale Sparrow, David Allen, Sharon Smith (tall) and Olha Prijic. Look for continued enhancements under the bridge as we work with different partners and investors to this project.

Please check out this link from an local arts blogger– great press for some additional donations perhaps: Art &Seek

Thanks to all who were able to help out and for the additional donations. There is still more to do. But for now, we hope we have a vibrant gateway for all of us to enjoy. Take a stroll downtown and come home with a smile.

Color Coming to Gateway

The Gateway committee has been working on ideas to spruce up the Ross Avenue
underpass since the first phase of the project was completed back in the
spring. There were ideas floating around about murals and we believe an artist
has been selected to spearhead the first ones. If all goes as planned, you
should see a wonderful design representing the essence of the Arts District
coming soon.
Unfortunately, our underpass seems to be the target of taggers who want
choose to display unwanted graffiti and costing tax payers when the city has to
paint over it. Hopefully the mural ideal will curtail some or all of this activity.
Remember, donations are always welcomed to keep up the momentum for this
project. Please send your gifts to Gateway To The Arts District, P.O. Box
710206, Dallas, Texas 75371. For more information, please contact: David Allen
at a_davidallen@hotmail.com, 214-887-8708 OR Wayne Smith at

Most yards in Bryan Place are looking great! You all are making the Yard of the Month choice challenging to pick. When I was walking on San Jacinto, I glanced down one of the cul-de-sacs and noticed a landscape that required a closer look. Rick Mazola’s yard at 3323 San Jacinto is a smorgasbord of rocks, plants, art and pottery to name a few. The arched flagstone alleyway off the driveway and behind the landscape sets a quaint and peaceful atmosphere of a place you would like to sit and enjoy.

A “mini” rainforest setting has various plants tucked in the strategically placed moss-covered rocks and boulders, yard art and pottery providing an eclectic mix and other interesting things stand amongst the multi-leveled rocks.

Thank you, Rick, for such a wonderful landscape that contributes in keeping Bryan Place a desirable neighborhood to live. With everyone’s efforts in keeping their curb appeal can only have a positive future for Bryan Place.

Tip of the month: Plant seasonal annuals, such as marigolds and ornamental peppers, for fall color.
